Social Security Phone Scams- Do’s and Don’ts


Social security benefits have increased consistently to offer best services to the people. These are basically the welfare programs that focused mainly on senior citizen, women, children, and disabled people. You can have Disability, Medicare, Retirement and Survivor benefits once you register under this program.





Social Security Administration (SSA) has reported that thousands of Americans receives fake calls from malicious sources regarding their social security details.


Scammers usually ask about your Social Security number (SSN). They often says that your SSN has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a some illegal activity. Sometimes, they also wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it or threaten you by saying that your bank account is about to be seized. After that they assure you that if share some information to them they will figure a way out.



And the most important of all they use a caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but that’s a fake number. It’s not the real SSA calling for your concern.

Here’s What to Do If You Receive Such A Call:


  • Don’t provide any information when you receive such calls. Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended and your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • Despite you don’t need any kind of verification. If that’s the case you can visit your nearest social security office for social security card replacement, application or for some other purpose.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or ask you to provide money, send cash. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer who wants to take your money.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213 but these scammers use fake Id’s. If you are not sure what to do when receive such type of call, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to cross check whether you are talking to the real Social security.
  • Never provide any part of your Social Security number Or your bank account or credit card number to anyone who contacts you.
